Large and beautiful,
the monarch is one of America's most recognizable and popular
butterflies. For releases, it is a show stopper, a graceful, colorful
flier. Once released, monarchs will seek nearby nectar sources
such as monarda, butterfly bush, coneflower, zinnias, and other
seasonal flowers. Adults may mate. If
so, females will find milkweed plants on which they will lay up
to 700 eggs. Monarchs released at weddings in late August, September
and early October will orient themselves to thier new locale and
then join other monarchs on the annual fall migration to winter
hibernation areas in central Mexico.
